My oldest daughter has taken up crew as her newest sport. This last weekend she had a regatta and we got to watch them race. As they were positioning the skull for the start 2 of her boat mates failed to maintain the rhythm and synchronicity with the rest of the boat. The boat lagged, veered off course and basically had trouble getting aligned.
Now getting several 11 and 12 year old boys and girls to do anything in unison is difficult but it was an interesting thing to watch as the coxswain attempted to direct the wayward crew members to reset their beat.
Crew
In any event the importance of this as an teachable moment for alignment of a team, company, or unit was not lost on me. The skull in this case when aligned and the crew rowing in unison achieves its maximum speed and efficiency when all are aligned and in sequence with their strokes. When there is a slight off tick in the stroke the speed softens and eventually if not corrected the boat drifts. How so like out businesses is the mechanics of the efficient crew team.
Business Managers and Leaders don’t miss the opportunity to align your team, beat the drum on those Key Business Indicators that are critical to your success and keep your team in sync.
